At first glance, today’s post may give you the impression that we are about to discuss the detailed, functional aspects of motoring in Maine.
However, what we are about to explore is the area known as driving courtesy that you may not know existed, or have forgotten about, living in any number of megalopolis centers around the country.
Specifically, a frequent situation that “drivers from away” encounter, is a seeming absence of right-of-way that is common in the Big City. For example, you, the unwary driver may be happily motoring along, enjoying the wonderful Maine scenery, when you pull up to a four-way intersection and cruise to a full stop. Seconds earlier, a Mainer had pulled up and stopped opposite you the hapless out-of-state, driver.
Normally in this situation, the Mainer, who had arrived at the four-way stop first would enjoy the right-of-way, having beat you to the intersection. You would be correct in assuming that the Mainer should normally proceed ahead of you, since you arrived second.
Be aware, gentle driver! This is not always the case in The Great State of Maine!
It is entirely possible that you, the bewildered driver from away, will find yourself being waved ahead by the smiling Mainer. Frantic, you think back over the past few seconds, trying to confirm that you indeed arrived at the four-way stop after the smiling Mainer.
Nevertheless, there you sit, idling, as the other driver is waving you ahead.
Now, we won’t presume to tell you how to drive, but we just wanted to make you aware of this frequent motoring situation so that you won’t be caught unawares when it does happen. Generally, as we encounter these friendly situations, we just accept the courteous gesture, continue on, and realize that we are so thankful to be living in this wonderful place.
